Rebel Rowing has been a part of Jasper Place High School for over a decade now and has won several city championships in the Edmonton Rowing Club’s High School program. Initially a team of Jasper Place and a program of the Edmonton Rowing Club, the Rebel Rowing team participated locally in the Edmonton Rowing Club’s High School Ergatta and Regatta each year.

Starting in 2016, efforts were made to expand the program with the goal to compete at more events regionally and nationally. In 2017, Rebel Rowing became an Out-of-School sport and a strong partnership was created with Jasper Place High School which allowed us to represent the school while continuing to expand. In doing so, the Rebel Rowing Program remains a program of the Edmonton Rowing Club and is self-funded through fundraising, fees, and donations.

Our goal is to create a strong developmental high school program that works to improve whole athlete. The Rebel Rowing program follows the guidelines set in Rowing Canada’s Long Term Athlete Development model and works on physical, mental, technical & tactical and life skills of each athlete.

In the Fall, we begin with novice rowing training¬† at the Edmonton Rowing Club while our experienced athletes are expected to participate in the ERC Junior Development program. Once the North Saskatchewan freezes in November, we move to our strength and conditioning season at Jasper Place High School before finally participating in the high school rowing season come February. The team participates in the ERC’s High School Ergatta each April and Regatta each June. Each year, the coaching staff identify other regattas that the team may participate in.

Rebel Rowing is a volunteer based program with all coaches being unpaid volunteers. As such, we rely on the support of our parents to help keep our team moving forward. The Rebel Rowing Booster Club assists in this mission by helping us with fundraising opportunities to help offset costs of training, competitions and equipment.

We encourage all students to give rowing a try. It is a sport that not many think of and we encourage everyone to try a session to see what it is truly about. If you are interested in trying, see the contact page to reach out to our coaching staff.
